Not sure about USPS, but UPS has a satellite image with an "X" marks the spot showing **precisely** where it was delivered. I've seen it in action.

They have GPS tracking as well--I don't know the details or the precision, but they can confirm that a lost package was delivered in the correct general area. I assume they must scan it before putting it in the mailbox and the scanner has GPS tracking.

I've talked to a local USPS service rep who's very good at her job, and when a package is lost in a rural area they can confirm it was delivered correctly (unless of course the carrier for that route stole the package).

Should have used Fedex.

They're not perfect either. I've seen them lose three in transit and misdeliver another in the past month.

USPS.com and Amazon.com show the package as delivered, but it wasn't
----------------------------------------------------------

check with neighbors, just in case.....
if not, then notify amazon there was no delivery.

no point contacting the post office....too frickin hard unless you know the frikkin local number.

then wait, just like the army.......

The last 2 out of 5 Amazon orders shipped by USPS arrived after the 2 day delivery date for Amazon Prime. A quick email to Amazon saying this in not acceptable resulted in 2 free months of Amazon Prime being added to my account.

I'm a little surprised Prime would use USPS. USPS is generally the fastest (2 days to a metro area, 3 days to an outlying area) but it's the least reliable.

UPS is the slowest but Amazon has warehouses all over the country so that cuts the transit time way down. UPS is also more expensive but Amazon's volume is high enough to get a substantial discount.

Of course, the real shame about the carriers sucking is how much it hurts mom and pop operations. The Wal-Marts and Amazons of the world can easily eat those costs but the smaller operations really feel it. The other bad thing is that all the crappy postal employees keep their jobs, while they destroy other people's jobs. The losses aren't enough to put a small company out of business but it's an additional expense that makes those companies decide not to expand, or decide to throw in the towel and reassign their employees to other tasks (which means those jobs aren't open for new hires).

My problem with the Mom & Pop operations is I try to buy local but they don't have the part. Example local lawn mower dealer/shop. I call on a Monday and ask if they have xxxx part in stock. No we don't but we can get it here by Fri. Thanks but no thanks. Amazon can get it here by Wed for about the same price and I don't have to go get it or pay sales tax.

Sometimes it gets left on the truck for whatever reason. I'd give it another day.
