A lot of the guys manning the lines are war veterans from the days when the Soviet Union invaded Afganistan.
This battle is one of the last vestiges of the Cold War being played out. The demonstrators want ties to the West (Europe) and their "rights" back. Their government is being forced by Moscow to keep economic ties solely with the East. Their country is divided geographically...those in the West have more ties to the West and want more.
