actually they are not given a finite period of time to make a profit.... the period of time you are talking about is actually when they have exclusivity in making that particular drug... after the patent expires, generic manufacturers can make the same product, along with the original brand name manufacturer.... the name brand maker can still make the drug, and, perhaps, a profit....
