I think at 4 years, it was still almost guaranteed on anniversary night, as long as you got her a gift, maybe take her out for dinner.
By 8 years, you have to work for it a little more. Double digit years mean you hive to get just the right amount of booze and kiss some serious arse. Oh, and don't get her pissed off at you for at least about 2 weeks before.

**Update—Took her out to dinner with the kids(couldn’t get a sitter on short notice). Kids behaved badly when we got home, she’s in a bad mood, I’m laying low until we lay down later.

When we hit 36 yrs a few yrs back, the kids came up from BR to Brandon, MS where we were living at the time, to surprise us at church.
At a small reception after communion, someone commented on 36 years of marital bliss.
Mrs. Misanthrope says, without missing a beat, "Well, 32 bliss, a couple of meh, and a couple of terrors."
