Had the day off yesterday so I decided to try mountain biking for the first time in the sierra nevadas. I jumped on a shuttle that took 20 people up the mountain to a downhill "intermediate" trail. Everyone had biking gear and clothes and I was the guy in khakis and a tshirt.

The trail was brutal, it dropped 2,000 ft in the first 4 miles, then uphill 900 ft, then another 10 miles downhill. I was pretty much holding the brakes the entire time-there were lots of bumps, roots, stumps, rocks all over. I got passed up by everyone in the first 5 minutes and got scraped up after taking a spill while trying to turn on a sandy patch. The whole time I was hoping I'd make it down alive

It felt like going down a black run as a beginner skier. Anyone else been in over their head like this?

That right there is why I miss the mountains. Spills or not, sounds like you had an awesome day.

Yeah it was awesome, I was so worn out at the end. Even going mostly downhill can really wear you down. I'm gonna give it another shot but I need to go on the easier trails for now.

Probably hiking some Phoenix mountains in the middle of summer. I was visiting for a conference and had friends that lived there. I am a pretty fit guy but I seriously thought I was going to die of heat stroke that day

I do wish I was more of a risk-taker, though.

My first day in Afghanistan. I got off the airplane and it was so dark I couldn't see my hand in front of my face and then a few hours later we took her first rocket attack

That's pretty badass. I know probably not so much from a soldier's point of view, but, as a civilian, it sounds badass.
