I recently got rid of my sport and got a Volvo. The Range Rover Sport, isn't really a range rover anyway so you can't really compare the sport to the Range Rover. Mine was a good car, it never had a single issue and I put 90k miles on it in three years. Most of those miles were pulling my boat. Our camp truck is my old Discovery, which was a pile of shite in every way except mechanically. The engine, transmission, axles, were bomb proof.
The LR3 (if it's still around) with the 3.2 is a good truck. It's the same chassis as the 03-13 xc90 and a couple of Ford SUV's. Rock. Solid. Except for the ones that like to puke their rear pinion bearings but that's something you can fix for cheap.
At least go drive the Volvo xc90. That fricker will seat 7 adults. It's not the most manly thing in the world but if you tint the windows nobody will see you anyway. The seats are like driving around on a pillow made of baby angels.
I had an Audi Q7 TDI as a loaner about a month ago, that thing is damn near perfect in every way. If you can look past the whole VAGCOM thing it's a fantastic car. It would behoove you go test drive one. Since you like to lease, they have very good lease incentives.

bare bones, quirky, and an absolute beast

cousin had this one (but in green).
In spite of the price, I believe the vehicle has little to no caché in the US now, however.

I know exactly what it is. It looks better than either vehicle in the OP. Subjective? Sure, but that is why I posted it. Settle down.

I had this beaut when I graduated college and landed my job. While I believe it is one of the finer looking vehicles (I actually like this model better than the current versions), it couldn't have been a bigger piece of clunky shite in the world.
I wanted to love the vehicle so much. Time after time I tried to justify it as it sat in the shop more than on the road. At the end of the day, it was a dud.

I think they are owned by Tata out of India now. When BMW owned Land Rover they put the 7 series drive train in some and those are pretty highly sought after but they are creeping up on 20 years old. The Land Rovers that are built on the Ford EUCD chassis are good cars. I believe those would be 2006 and up. The newer Land Rovers are pretty reliable but like anything else euro the dealer maintenance is silly expensive. They are a lot of like the mercs and have $600-800 oil changes.
I would be surprised if anything 2006 and up had any significant recurring problems. Mine sport was 2010 and was 100% reliable. The only reason I went over to Volvo was my wife got the XC70 and I liked it so much I got the XC90.
