I grew up in Richmond in the 90s, and that was a big part of the deal there. Most residents didn't give a shite about gang-related violence and drug dealers killing each other. When kids started getting killed, the community flipped the switch.

Before it was deemed racist, 3 strikes laws and tougher sentencing was supported by black leaders who were sick of the bloodshed. This was in the 90s under Clinton.
