Binge eating, or bulimia, is an eating disorder. It is not a leading cause of obesity. 70% of Americans are overweight and 33% are obese, meaning their BMIs are above 30.
Most Americans are fat for a very simple reason, overeating and lack of exercise. High calorie prepared food is extremely available and the distractions of computers, TVs and other sedentary-inducing technologies have made active lives all but undesirable.
It's an epidemic that has not yet peaked. It began in the mid-1990s so we have not yet seen its full effect on the collective health of Americans. We are the fattest society but Europe, Australia, South Africa, Mexico, and Brazil are gaining on us.
Health Departments across the nation are beating their drums about the dangers of obesity but no one is listening. As usual with people, only the coming health catastrophe will convince us that overeating is unhealthy and that proper nutrition is a good thing.

quote:You don't pay for that, genius. You pay for the deadbeats who are getting discounted if not free medical care. That's why premiums are so damn high. The rest of us who pay for our healthcare are all taking up the slack for those who don't.
I'm not looking forward to paying for your diabetes treatment, knee replacements, triple bypass and high blood pressure medication.
So in other words, you're pissed off at the wrong group. Good job.

What really baffles me is not obese people, but those who are 15 lbs overweight at 21 and are 15-20 lbs overweight ten years later.
Obese people have given up but if you are 15 lbs away from looking good, why not bust your arse for a month or two and get rid of it. These people could have spent a decade looking good, yet instead spent that decade overweight...very sad
