I like to see a source to that. 99% defects sounds high for just about anything.
From what I can find, they havent even confirmed there is a link at all.

A link to microcephaly in newborns of infected mothers is now thought possible

quote:

It's not certain Zika causes birth defects
Zika's strongly suspected of causing a severe birth defect called microcephaly, which causes underdevelopment of the head and brain. Babies with microcephaly often miscarry before they are born, or they die at birth. Those who survive are usually very disabled. Other viruses are known to cause microcephaly if a pregnant woman is infected - rubella is the most notorious. But Zika belongs to a family of viruses not known to cause birth defects and birth defects had not been noticed in countries that had Zika previously. It's also not entirely clear to what degree cases of microcephaly have increased in Brazil, although 3,500 cases were seen in recent months. There are some smoking guns - some babies born with microcephaly or their mothers have evidence of the virus. But it's hard to test for Zika and there's no quick, on-the-spot test, making research difficult.

That looks frighteningly like a girl I dated (still a good friend), Sara, who still lives in Nicaragua and is PREGNANT.

But she hasn't given birth yet...

I don't think.

Zika virus RNA was detected in the amniotic fluid of two fetuses, indicating that it had crossed the placenta and could cause fetal infection

On 20 January 2016, scientists from the state of Paraná, Brazil, detected genetic material of Zika virus in the placenta of a woman who had undergone an abortion due to the fetus' microcephaly, which confirmed that the virus is able to pass the placenta

That's great. Still doesn't have any confirmation whatsoever to birth defects. I am just giving factual info that is available. You are pulling 99% quotes out your arse

maybe, lost in translation

quote:

“Of those children, 99 percent will survive, but with limitations in their mental faculties.”

Looking at it though. Brazil estimates that " that there are between 400,000 and 1.4 million Zika cases in the country."

hi-lo estimate of pregnancy exposure

400,000 times the birthrate of 15 per 1,000
1.4 million times the birthrate 15 per 1,000

which would mean 6,000 to 21,000 pregnant women exposed in a year.

However, the issue is the 1st trimester, so 3 months of the year. 6k to 21k becomes 1,500 kids to 5,250 kids

quote:

Total number of suspected Zika-related microcephaly cases since Oct. 22 when the government introduced a mandatory reporting requirement - 3,893

so would you say the transmission rate is rather high and better to err on the side of wake the frick up get this taken care of?
