If most of the murderers would not speak to police and shut up they would walk.

Murderer tries to talk his way out and gets caught in a lie. He gets confronted in the lie and tells another lie.

Soon the lies are adding up.

The only thing to say to a police officer is

I’m constantly amazed how many witnesses to a crime have known the murderer from the neighborhood since childhood and yet they only know the murderer through his nickname/street name, with no clue to his given family name.

I’m also surprised how often a dead-end case is broken wide open by an anonymous tipster. 75% of the cases seemingly get solved through sheer luck of a random hotline call that leads to an interview/confession and not because of some CSI/forensic discovery.
