The enclaves consist of 26 separate pieces of land in the Netherlands that are actually part of Belgium. In many cases individual houses and buildings are split between two countries.

At one time, according to Dutch laws restaurants had to close earlier. For some restaurants on the border, this simply meant that the customers had to move to a table on the Belgian side.

Many fireworks shops are found in Baarle-Hertog, owing to Belgian laws controlling the sale of fireworks that are more lenient than those in the Netherlands.

Holland sounds like a bunch of fun hating kill joys.

I'll hang out on the Flemish side of the bar.

Buildings sitting within both countries pay taxes according to where their front doors are located. Some shops have apparently moved their doors "as a tax dodge of sorts." Indeed, there was a complicated legal case in which a bank engaged in money laundering had a front door in the Netherlands, but a vault in Belgium.

Interesting. Move your front door to whichever country gives you the best tax rate.

There are two things I hate in this world: people that are intolerant of other people’s cultures, and the Dutch.
