There's a reason why Lincoln wasn't even on the ballot in some southern states. The Republican Party was seen as anti-slavery and abolitionist in nature. The last thing the Deep South wanted was to vote for someone who was opposed to slavery and its expansion.

To not put Lincoln on the ballot & secede from the Union before he's even sworn in is quite the visceral reaction to a man who didn't care about slavery.

The thing is Lincoln couldn't end slavery & had no intentions before the Civil War. At best he could attempt to prevent it's Westward expansion & that would be difficult with the Kansas- Nebraska Act & Dred Scott.

He wanted to limit slavery's expansion, which southerners saw as all but ending the institution. Their belief was that if slavery didn't continue to expand it would eventually die. If more free states were coming into the Union than slave states, eventually the abolitionists would control both the House and Senate and use their superior numbers to end slavery with a constitutional amendment.
