It's all relative to the age and job situation of the friend getting married:

Got married broke as hell in college: got a cheapo walmart hammer with my name engraved on it.

Got married right after grad school: Wallet with my initials and a tie.

Got married after some time in the job and debt paid down: Tissot watch and cufflinks.
