The tracks aren't a line. The checkpoints were at Angela on both St. Claude and Judge Perez. Then on Paris Rd right where the Pearl Harbor memorial is now. The officers there actually rode out Rita in the 2nd story of the jail.
I remember first time there after Katrina, passing through the Paris Rd Checkpoint. Boats, cars, crap everywhere leading up to the checkpoint. Then, as you went through, there was a massive cross in the middle of the road someone had put up. that, and the national guard soldiers holding very large guns.
I thought I had mentally bucked up myself enough to handle it. Fail.

3 things will stick with me the rest of my life:
1) The smell while waiting in the checkpoint line with the window down.
2) The lack of birds around Marina Wharf. It was total silence.
3) The humvees with armed soldiers riding around the neighborhood as we were pulling what we could out of my mom's house.
