My impression is project managers are the most pissy bunch of people I've ever met.
This could have been an educational thread.

I take offense to that...I was a PM for 7 years
I have a younger guy (30ish) at my work who has a PMP, working as a "senior scheduler". Dude sucks balls. He's way behind all the scheduler and cost guys. If you looked at his linkedin profile you'd think he was the lead project controls for Lockheed Martin. He doesn't do a smidgen of what his resume says

Awesome......proves my point

The PMP will quit mattering when companies stop placing value on it. I don't know what else to tell you.

Your data point is one anecdote on a message board with the word "droppings" in the URL?

I'll be getting my PMP eventually bc my company wants me to. I'm in IT project mgmt. They pay for it and then it lets them pay me more for having it. I don't see any problems with it

PMP doesn't mean shite in construction. It's good in engineering or IT where you have someone who graduated in something technical. It seems like it is more of a prerequisite in IT project management from what I've seen

IT is what I have to deal with a ton of. It will be helpful.

You don't work with hospitals by any chance?

PMP is a cancer in IT right now. It's one of those things that starts off as a good idea but gets overvalued and oversupplied.
I was tempted to go that route but enjoying my job is paramount. I have to be deep in the code/technical side of things in order to be happy.

LOL. I deal with healthcare procurement (HIT) but nothing on a hospital level.

Ah, I work in HIT/IS. Thought maybe we may have crossed paths, but not if you don't work with any hospitals.

You work as A but apply for B but try to get bullshite certifications that won't help you make the switch. Ok, I'm done. Sorry you are mad.
I say you get your PMP and tell anyone that has a problem with it to eat a dick.

We once had a client company who was complaining that their IT costs were spiraling out of control, a critical upgrade had gone sideways, and they lacked the in house expertise to fix it.
They had a CIO, 2 directors, 3 asst directors, 6 project managers, 3 supervisors, and 6 actual IT guys, 4 of which were straight out if college and had no clue what they were doing.
Each project was basically 2 guys trying to do everything and 10 people supervising them. This was for servers, virtualization, backups, application development, PC support, email, SAN, VPN, websites, networking, databases, workflow, printers, etc.
:smh:

The certification brings value to Procurement. Some of the PM skills can really be applied to long term strategic planning. It's rare you see a Procurement Officer knowing how or willing to bring a project from development through implementation.
Procurement has traditionally been viewed as a service function rather than an executive one. That needs to change and it not doing so, leads to inefficient expenditures.
Sure there are PMs if given a budget and resources can allocate them effectively but there aren't too many Procurement Officers that take that PM approach in the execution of programmatic initiatives in the public sector.
That's why I want a PMP cert.

You definietly sound like you need a PMP.....

Isn't PM for those folks that lack technical skill(s), but who attempt to demonstrate their value through scheduling countless numbers of unproductive conference calls and distributing spreadsheets "tasking" employees with completion of items, most of which truly have little to nothing to do with completion of the project.
