People have a horrible misconception that Jesus promised Christians happiness or success. He did not! The idea that Christianity will bring wealth, happiness, success, etc. is a modern day phenomenon that is spread by hucksters like Joel Osteen.
Jesus in fact, promised the opposite to Christians. He said they would be persecuted for their faith, hated by the world and their own families. He warned that they would one day be delivered up for death and implored them to die to self and take up their cross daily.
