I have a good friend that just signed a contract to work in a rural area as a family medicine doctor for a hair under 300k/yr. Also has opportunity for bonuses plus 50% loan forgiveness after 3 yrs.

Dang it's almost like you should have been paying them down versus taking three years off.

That would have been dumb as well. Best thing to do would have been to put payments into an account (preferably one that accrues interest) while forgiveness was still on the table and then ultimately if not passed, make a lump payments when they resumed.
