they way I've heard it, he was the only one somewhat sober enough to hold it together at the time and he took over almost by default
There was plenty enough fault to go around with how they handled the recording of Tusk. For starters, when Lindsay made his demands it included him doing most of the mixing at his home studio which gave him complete control. Each member recorded their parts independent of the others. When Lindsay brought the "final" version of Tusk to the band there was no Stevie to be found. He simply left her off the mix hoping she wouldn't notice. She did, and she threatened to not tour if he didn't remix the album with her parts.
Mick was probably at his wildest at that time and it would culminate with the band making essentially no money on the Tusk tour and Mick being fired as the band's manager.
Even Mick's firing didn't solve anything because all that did was lead to every band member obtaining their own management. At that point doing anything with Fleetwood Mac, even a simple band interview, became nearly impossible.

Thanks for letting me and the rest of the board know not to take your shitty music opinions seriously. Fleetwood Mac was better without Buckingham/ Knicks, back in the days when Peter Green was the frontman .
Now this is just stupid.

don’t know about that, that band had been slogging around in mediocrity for years before they traded for the Buckingham Nicks duo
It didn't help much that when the band started having legitimate success their undisputed band leader tried to do all of the acid, advocated to give all of the band's money away, and then had a schizophrenic break.
Mick Fleetwood kept that band together through all of that. Then did the same again when Jeremy Spencer decided to take a walk, joined a cult, and never came back. That happened when the band was again gaining some traction.
Maybe the best attribute that Buckingham and Nix had going for them was their ability to cope with the madness.

Better musically, maybe. Green didn't even want to be the front man. Hell, he didn't even want to be the lead guitarist on a regular basis, so he hired another guitarist. By the time he left the band Green didn't even want the band to be successful.
Peter Green was probably the most talented British guitarist of that era, even Clapton agrees. But, FM wasn't a better band then by any conceivable metric other than personal taste.

She's up there with Keith Richards for the RRHOF drug wing.
