Speaking of Canada, downtown Detroit is north of the Canadian border.

Windsor, Ontario, is just across the river to the south of Detroit. They made some awesome engines for Ford back-in-the-day.

I can't play the state game (I live in the N GA mountains and the NC border is common knowledge to anyone with a motorcycle).

But Lake Lanier shoreline is 692 miles long.

You can get from Truist Park (Atlanta Braves) to Ontario Canada in that distance by road.

More on the city side, but El Paso is closer to Los Angeles than El Paso is to Houston.

Not true. What youre thinking about is that El Paso is closer to California than the eastern TX border.

El Paso to Los Angeles is 800 miles even on I-10. El Paso to Houston is 746 miles on I-10. I'd consider that mostly a push given the distance.

El Paso to the respective borders isn't even close to even. It's about 576 miles to the California border (on 10. I think it's technically closer if you take 8 out of Phoenix), about 857 to Orange on the other side.

Windsor also produced a lot of whiskey that was smuggled across the Detroit River during prohibition.

Oklahoma and New Mexico probably the shortest between 2 states.

If we’re ranking towns/cities in NC that belong in the SEC, Chapel Hill is probably dead last

Chapel Hill and Carrboro are a lot like Athens. Great bars and music scene, beautiful old southern homes, etc. I understand why you think CH doesn't belong in the SEC because a lot of libs live there, but it's really southern in every other way.

I think Oklahoma and Missouri have a shorter border by a few miles.

And for the record, Emporia VA is the armpit of the world and a speed trap.

Elliott and Hermie Sadler are from there.

I always thought that he would have done better in nascar than he did.

Seemed like a great driver in the Busch Series but never lived up to the hype in Sprint Cup.

This is a more common border than it's being given credit for. As a Georgia resident, this border is taken as the quickest route to go to Cherokee Harrah's for people who live in NE Georgia. It's accessed most frequently via US 23/441 from Clayton GA to Franklin, NC and then to Cherokee and Murphy. Rabun County GA touches both NC and SC.

It can also be accessed via GA.Hwy 69 just north of Hiawassee,GA along Lake Chatuge.

Only the last 3 miles of Lookout Mountain are in Tennessee. The rest of the ridge is pretty much equally split between Alabama and Georgia.

I saw the Avett Brothers at a theatre on State Street in Bristol about 15 years ago. State Street is also the state line, so half of downtown is in VA and half is in TN.

Aren't there a few instances where a state border was set based on a river and then the river "moved" resulting in an island parcel of land that still belongs to a state but is now cutoff from the rest of it?

This happened w/Georgia and Tennessee. The Tennessee River (the 35th parallel) was supposed to be the northern border of Georgia but there was a surveying issue and Tennessee kept that portion of land. So Chattanooga was supposed to be in Georgia.

Maryland's 2-3 western counties tried to petition to join WV a few years ago or something like that. If you've ever driven through the hell that is Interstate 68 through that stretch of Maryland, you know it's basically just West Virginia anyway.

It's also in the Pittsburgh media market.

But you are right, it might as well be W.Virginia

40 is a long arse road.

My tire blew out on 40 10 miles east of Asheville the Friday before Christmas. The entire sidewall separated. Thank God for USAA roadside assistance.
