FreeTaxUSA saved me money by not having to pay the BS fees that TurboTax and HR on me since I have one or two things that force me to upgrade the plans I would've had to pay.
I was just about to say this.

If they can audit me and tell me what’s wrong, why do I need to do it at all?

I don’t think taxes on income are in the constitution. If memory serves, wasn’t the government intended to be funded by tariffs on other nations?

It's ridiculous that we can't go to IRS.gov and have free use of the equivalent of Turbo Tax for basic filers, which is the vast majority of individuals.
The only reason we can't is that the tax-prep industry funnels enough money to legislators that they protect their racket at the expense of individual citizens.
A podcast talked to citizens of several other countries about their experience paying taxes. Most had no idea what tax day was in their country, and filing and paying taxes was not considered any sort of administrative burden.
