Now that’s a name I haven’t heard in awhile. I had a Biff Pocoroba baseball card?? Teammate of Dale Murphy who was just at a benefit dinner for a local high school baseball team here in my neighboring town.

McGruff was a Slidell dog as that’s where it originated.

We need a dog to take a bite out of inflation. "Seymour Katz" or something... the idea isn't fully formed, just hoping someone can run with it.

That Winston Cavendish guy from STPSO always seemed to imply that he had "created McGruff" without outright saying it. He did meet Reagan at the White House in the dog costume (this was before "furries"), and there was even a McGruff statue in front of the old courthouse in Covington for a while.

Cavendish apparently thought he could parlay his McGruff career into winning the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's election. That is not how Louisiana politics works, though, and he got his clock cleaned. Shortly thereafter, Pat Canulette (the guy who beat Cavendish) had the statue removed, claiming he was afraid it might fall over on someone. And that is how Louisiana politics works .

I think Cavendish was originally from Canada. Very nice guy, but a little clueless. Some of his techniques in that election campaign were pretty dubious... basically, he was doing "McGruff events" that morphed into campaign events. I think if Canulette had ever thought the election was at risk in any real way, Cavendish (and, by proxy, McGruff) would have been indicted.
