re: Should every man own a suit?

Yes. Even if you do not need a suit for your work, and even if you hate wearing a suit to social functions, you should have a suit for certain occasions, i.e., a wedding or a funeral or a graduation. If anything, it shows respect for the occasion.
If you seldom wear a suit, I still do not believe that you should cheap out. With moderate wear, a good suit can last you ten, twenty, thirty years - or more - as long as it is conservative in terms of the details.
As for what you should own, there are a multitude of options. If you only intend to purchase one suit (and I think two should be the minimum), it should be navy or grey (and preferably dark grey - just shy of charcoal), and it should preferably be fully canvassed (or at minimum, half-canvassed). Why? Well, in a fused or half-canvassed suit the shape of the garment is accomplished by gluing the wool to "fusible." After a certain number of dry cleanings (or, more specifically, if the dry cleaner applies too much heat), the fusible will become unglued and separate from the wool. This causes bubbling. Conversely, in a fully canvassed garment the wool is stitched to horsehair canvassing which provides the shape. The increase in longevity is absurd with a fully-canvassed suit.

I haven't owned a suit in over 20 years and probably over 30 years.
These two statements don't go together

Nordstrom's.
Nordstrom really doesn't have the best selection of suits.

Every adult man should own at least one suit.

It's got Canali, though.

Do not buy a suit online.

Yes. Needs to be decent quality. Two if you can afford it, but certainly one. Also a couple of sports coats and several pairs of nice slacks. Dillard's or Men's Warehouse are decent choices. Also some decent dress shirts and ties.

They rarely look as good as advertised. It's a pain in the arse when it doesn't fit and you have to return it. Or you end up having to have it altered by a third party. At the very minimum you have to pay to have it pressed before you can wear it.

Yes.
So you aren't caught like you are now. Dark color. Nothing too trendy. Charcoal gray is always good.
A good shite you rarely wear also doesn't lie to you when you think you are getting fatter. Lol

How many of y'all have a 3-piece suit?

Just buy a tux. You can wear it to the wedding and then every so often just bust it out on a random night and wear it to the bars. There is nothing better than going to the bars in a tux since by nature every bitch is nosy and they will all come up to you wanting to know why you are wearing it and you can tell them any story you want.
ETA: I am sure it has been mentioned but be sure you budget for a good tailor. A well-tailored dirt cheap suit is going to look way better than an expensive suit that doesn't fit perfectly.

I own 5, and haven't worn any of them in 10 years. It's not easy to go this long without funerals or weddings. A sports coat is as dressed up as I ever get these days and that is rare.
