Thus is why air shows should only be held over water

it was pretty hot yesterday for UK standards

I suspect this will be the biggest factor. Hot air expands and a plane can not maneuver as well as it can in cooler temps.

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport actually shut down for part of the day because airport officials didn't have airline performance charts for temperatures that high.

The pilot is in critical condition and if he lives he needs to be prosecuted. Doing a barrel roll anywhere near a busy road is unacceptable and irresponsible. There were plenty of fields there for him to crash into.

All of that said, you see more of these types of crashes than it feels like you should. Makes you start to wonder if these guys don't check their planes as often as they should. Say, they do their run twice in a day, but they, or their crew, only check(s) it before the first run, and not the second. Boom, mechanical failure.

Most of the time it is a simple mistake, Thunderbird's F16 crashed at air show also doing a loop because the pilot set the altimeter to the wrong elevation before take off.
