If you let him pay the whole thing then he's gonna think it's his dog all the time. Just go ahead and pay half that way you can do whatever you want with the dog and he can't say shite.

The lease includes a $400 pet deposit on top of the $500 regular deposit- should I feel compelled to split that with my new roommate or should he pay all of that (I don't have any pets)?

Split the 500 dollar regular deposit evenly, and he can pay the pet deposit. Unless you plan on adopting one of them, I don't know why you would kick in?

split the regular deposit, but have a conversation with him beforehand that if you lose any portion of the deposit due to damage caused by the dogs, then he needs to cover that entire cost, not you. If he has a problem with that, dont room with him.

This too.

If you don't pay part of his pet deposit. Then you can't pet his dogs.
