My dad had an epic battle with a rat in 80s, he killed a washer, dryer, a garbage disposal and 1500 dollar damage to AC. He finally poisoned him but the rat died under our stairs which would have taken 10k to remove so even in death he mocked my dad. Of unknown origins-Ocean Springs.

Easy fix -moth balls they hate them

I took in a stray kitten. He is 14 pounds now and has rid my farm of rats and mice.

Get some stray cats.
In general rats are schooled by rats. Mice a different story.

Nah get a couple rat terriers. Problem solved.
light years better than cats on rats. but still behind coyotes and owls.

OWL decoys work but you have to move them. Coyote phermones/urine works wonders - rats know coyotes and rat snakes mean game over.

also check any area you don't want them nest or getting into WEEKLY.

and don't leave pet food outside. if you have bird feeders put a trail cam on the ground area under them, 2 nights will show u what you are up against.

Ok ,Rat update. Rat ate green poison I put out. Three days later he was back. What the hell! Bought one of those electrical killer boxes. What is a bait that rats can’t resist? Guys I need help big time.
small piece of cooked bacon, rats will ignore a new trap until they get used to seeing it or they are starving.
