Mental illness is real, but it's less prevalent, and less relevant to situations like this, than you imagine.

I don't know much about this River Ridge situation, but I know people tend to drag out the "mental health" comment when someone commits suicide. The fact, though, is that suicide can be a rational decision, a product of delusion, an evil expression of anger, or any combination of these things. I imagine taking someone else's life is the same.
