Simple. Don't try to impress by showing them you have good Microsoft word skills by making it "pretty".
The person who will look at it wants to be able to look at one page to see your skills related to the job and any other information that could be relevant. Put your name and contact info on the top. Put your education, job skills then other skills. Don't put an objective. Just state the facts about yourself.
Don't ever pay a resume service. If you decide to pay them, I will charge you half the price and give you one that will get you results.

Last job I had offered a service from Lee Hecht Harrison as part of a severance. I would be glad to share their prospective from a paid service. I modified what I had, which I thought was decent, greatly after their input.
