So two years ago (at age 49) my physician finally placed me on a beta blocker. I was happy I made it that far as my Dad started at age 35 and he was always very fit. The problem is that once I started the beta blocker I started bloating and slowly gaining weight. So let me say now that I eat a great diet and walk 40+ miles per week . So for a month I limited myself to 1500 calories per day against an estimated calorie expenditure of nearly 4000 calories. I lost 1 1/2 lbs in 4 weeks. I then continued the diet and exercise without the beta blocker and lost 4 lbs in the next two weeks. My resting heart rate stayed at a 53 average over this entire period even after stopping the beta blockers . So it appears as if the beta blocker is preventing me from dropping weight and my resting heart rate is excellent ( athlete range). As I don't monitor my blood pressure regularly, is my resting heart rate a good indication of my heart Health? Is it possible to have hypertension and a great resting heart rate ? I have no symptoms of any kind , no dizziness, no changes in heart patterns etc. What am I missing? Because I really feel better since I stopped taking the medication and I'm losing weight much faster.

You may want to see about your kidney and liver function. Your weight gain and bloating could be because of either kidney or liver functioning being below normal. A simple blood test should tell you if this is what's happening.

Are you seeing a lot of swelling in your ankles and feet?

That's the thing- I only checked the blood pressure once with the machine and it's in the high normal range. I can't get reliable readings with the crappy home one. But my resting heart rate is stellar. I feel like I may have walked myself to a great resting heart rate . But that doesn't necessarily mean I don't have high blood pressure, right?

Yes. They are two separate measurements and indicators of health.

Buy a bp cuff at a local Walgreens or something. If you continue to monitor it, you can chart the results daily and report them to the doctor. If acceptable he may take you off the beta blocker if the results are in healthy ranges.

You can have high blood pressure with a low heart rate. The only way to know what your blood pressure is, is to check it. There are medicines that treat high blood pressure without slowing down your heart rate.

I can't get a reading with those cuffs. I've bought two . No readings and I hand it to Mrs pimp and she gets a reading. I have to go somewhere to get an accurate reading.

Yes it's possible to have a hr in the 50s and have htn. As far as the low hr being an indicator of good cardiac function, it isn't really. An echocardiogram would be your best bet to define your cardiac function

Get a cheap stethoscope and sphygmomanometer (BP cuff) and have someone show you how to use it. Keep a consistent log with as many readings as possible and bring it to your doctor. He will thank you for it and will be able to better treat you.

Yes it is possible to have a low resting heart rate and high blood pressure. Can you ask your doc to try something like linsinopril instead of the beta blocker? You can also try over the counter stuff like Hawthorn berries, which worked well for my dad.

And since the release of the JNC8, they're typically preferred.

HR 53 is excellent. BB is essential if known CAD, heart attack post treatment and heart failure. It does not have to be your BP med if it's not agreeing with you. We stop BB frequently for lower heart rates and they usually cause fatigue but not commonly weight gain-unless weight up due to
heart failure. Does sound like BB not for you.....

Thyroid checked?

There are thin fit patients with great heart rates like yours who still have HTN and need meds. If you get a better BP cuff and check daily your doc will be able to make a better decision on what med you may need.

Make sure cuff size is right-bigger folks +200/250 lbs likely need larger cuff. I also prefer upper arm cuff and ask patients to skip the wrist monitors since office comparison always done with upper arm cuff. May not matter-just my preference last 16 years.

Hypertension is called "the silent killer" so you can feel great with high blood pressure. Super high blood pressure can cause stroke and heart failure symptoms....The healthy GOAL 110-130/60-85.

Great job watching your diet and walking daily. That is great! Try the Dash diet to tune up your routine. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. SEE YOUR DOC AND GIVE HIM OR HER THIS FEEDBACK. We have lots of choices for BP meds and this BB issue needs further discussion in your best interest and future health.

Thank you for taking the time to do that . I really appreciate it . Your familial proximity to our esteemed Poultry Boy , Godfather of the Poultry Boy family of message boards, is evident. I will find a good cuff per recommendations and bring this to my dr next month. You da man.
