Question about vehicle headlights

My son has an 85 Blazer and the lights were dingy and didn't match, etc.
Autozone (w 20% off coupon) had 2 sylvania Xtravision LIGHTS and BULBS in one for $11 each.
They look great, they're all glass and the light they put out is fantastic.
yet every shitty car in the last 20 years has plastic lights that cost HUNDREDS to replace with factory OEMs, turn yellow after 2 years in the sun and also contain a separate BULB that can run you anywhere from $25-$100.
why?
is a clear plastic light better than a good old glass all-in-one unit that will run you $11 with the latest technology (xtravision)?

I think the OEMs switched to plastic lenses for crash safety reasons. Less glass to shatter. The problem with the plastic lenses is that the UV coating can wear off and then they fade and turn yellow. This is solved easily by wetsanding and the buffing with a polish. Follow it up with some sort of synthetic sealer and you won't have yellow lenses again.

Neither of these statements are true. Your son's car is still a POS.

I've always heard to clean the "glass" with toothpaste.

Please don't listen to the people telling you that. Just watch the video I posted earlier.
