I assume he was smart the point it was difficult for him to relate to other people. His ability to reduce complex social phenomenons is astonishing.
What makes the manifesto disturbing, is that it's accurate.
He captures the dilemma of modern life, and in particular, he nails the problems with the left.
His solutions are fantastical though.

I know he was crazy, but he's not far off on what would happen in this country if you read his manifesto.

His manifesto was spot on. I listened to the whole thing today and it was a pretty amazing listen. Around paragraph 125, he talks about technology taking your freedom little by little, which was a pretty amazing read especially from someone contemplating this over 25 years ago.
