I bought my Eurorail passes for my upcoming Europe trip coming up, and I had a question. For the people that have done this before, do you have to make reservations or can you just hop on whenever they come? I ask because the eurorail passes me and my friend bought was just a package where we get 10 train rides in a 2 month span, and I just wasn't sure if I had to make reservations or I can just hop on.

It all depends on where you are going.

Check out the website, it tells you which ones require reservations.

Check out the link and see by route if it requires a reservation or not.

I did this about 5 years ago and it was hit or miss. If you know your travel plans, book the train trips ahead of time (2 weeks if you want a guaranteed seat). We lucked out booking some last minute, but for the most part we needed to book 3-5 days early. Only a certain number of seats are allocated for Eurorail on each train. On our trip we had 15 separate train rides planned, and we ended up using 13 on the Eurorail, the others we had to pay full price because the allotment was gone.

My friends and I did the Eurorail pass a few years ago and usually made reservations. We were able to get "first class" seats for €10-15 on most trips. Definitely worth it, IMO.

You show the pass to the ticket agent and they write you a ticket BEFORE you hop on. Also, those passes DO NOT entitle you to free tickets, but heavily discounted tickets. You still have to pay a fee for the tickets even with the passes.

Small Disclaimer**
I did the three country pass (Spain, Italy, France) in 2007, so rules may have changed since then. I doubt it though.

Yeah, I really felt like it almost defeated the purpose of having a ticket.

And you don't get 10 "rides." You get 10 days, so if you board a trail at 11pm and arrive at your destination at 2am, that's 2 days. At least, that's the way it worked in 1999.

FYI: Unless it has changed, you must always carry a Eurorail brochure/pass that you have to fill in each time you use one of the discounted tickets. Do this before getting on the train. If you are caught using a Eurorail ticket without the brochure/pass filled out, they can tear the pass up on the spot.

When i did it, we just hopped on where ever. One day we were in wolfsburg and would have had to wait 20some hours for the train to munich, instead we just went to amsterdam for 8 hours and then munich from there. Also of note, only one conductor on the whole trip punched our card. We couldve kept going until they punched us out but they never did

That's one type of pass. There are different types.
