If you're like the people I know, though, Reb, whenever you go back home and are with family and friends, your dialect automatically reverts back to where you grew up.

In Seattle I have almost no Spanish accent, but as soon as I talk on the phone with a Hispanic friend, assuming we are speaking English, my English becomes broken

I was flipping channels one weekend and one of his old cooking shows was on. He was cooking down a huge pot of cabbage. I couldn't turn it off. So strange, but yet entertaining.

The correct pronunciation is Bye You, unless you are from down the bayou (Larose, Cut Off, Golden Meadow), then it is pronounced bye yuh.

people from Mississippi that pronounce it Buy oh

There's a private school in Mississippi that is pronounced that way. Could be the cause of confusion.

That being said, Bye-you is the proper pronunciation.

Had a guy on my HS football team that kept us entertained on long bus rides to out of town games by telling Justin Wilson stories in character.

That's funny.

I caught one of his shows recently too. Maybe on LPB?
Love his jokes & decided to google him at the time. Didn't know he had comedy albums & also appeared on The Ed Sullivan show.

This is it exactly. That being said, I say buy-yah, but my arse lived in Houma and dulac for a long time, and some things just stick. Anyone that says it that way usually says it faster as well.
The true test of your Cajun heritage taking over is how you pronounce lagniappe though.

My dad's family is from Southern Louisiana and they pronounce it Buy you.
My mom's side is from Texas and later moved to Arkansas and they pronounce it bi-oh.

I see. I always said Buy you until a few folks from way down the Bayou told me it was supposed to be Buy yah. And like the one guy said, with the Buy being emphasized and the yah being quick. Sounds like it is a regional preference depending on where you grew up down there.

As said before, the only time I have heard Buy yo is in the Meters "Fire on the Bayou."
