Here's the problem with these cases, the state's victim is not always a sympathetic figure. Let's face it, her vocation makes her harder to sympathize with than if she had been, say, a teacher that works with blind orphans (as porkrind so eloquently provided an example). And it will ultimately be humans who prepare, present and judge this case.
It is cases like these where media and outside attention serve the public interest. Because it would be easy for the prosecution and police to plead this down to minor charges or let it slide altogether - "Look, this case is unwinnable. The victim's reputation is garbage. Let's cut our losses."*
