Anyone a Pipeline Controller and mind sharing how they liked/disliked the job? I have an interview coming up for the job, and it sounds like it's shift work while monitoring the flow through pipelines.

What kind of positions do people move into after being a Controller for a few years? Gas Scheduler sounds interesting, but I'm not sure how related these jobs are.

In my company, it seems to be a pretty good job, as the controllers seem to be fairly content....I have never seen one leave the company.

Their work is definitely shift work, which some people love and others are unable to adjust to. Good thing is that it is totally indoors.

Their job generally consists of adjusting gas flow rates to meet whatever amount of gas has been purchased through any particular supply point. They also monitor pressures and work with the field techs to correct problems. Controllers basically act as a dispatcher for pipeline personnel.

Yeah you'll get to tell people how to run a plant while knowing nothing about the process.

Just learn to make a call and be able to say, “you’re spec level XX is high and you’re now on a timer.”

My dad moved out of the field and into pipeline operations back in '98 for LNG. He misses the field, gained weight, but the shift work was actually not bad growing up, and the pay is great (picks up overtime or extra shifts whenever he wants). Every month he had a week off, and would have a day or two off in between transitioning from days to nights. He's since moved up to a senior operations manager position. Still works a console, but he's the go-to for the rest of the staff. 30+ years working in LNG and it has always been steady.

What company, if you don't mind me asking?

There are a lot of gas pipeline projects going on in WV and KY. Several out of state contracts coming in and doing really large scale work.
