Had two guinea pigs growing up. Those frickers would get out of their cage and leave little shite pellets everywhere

african sulcata tortoise

We have one for our 8 year old. Got him 2 years ago as a hatchling. Very easy upkeep. Just get the right lighting and heat lamp. They live over 100 years. Do not stink and make no noise. Cool to watch in the yard

gerbils > hamsters

Hamsters are nocturnal; gerbils are awake at various times throughout the day. Gerbils live longer. Gerbils are cleaner (desert animal). Gerbils are friendlier and do well in groups. Get at least two. We got my daughter three for her fifth birthday and don't regret it.

A turtle. Even a 6 year old couldn't kill one of those things.

My little girl turns 6 in a week and she really wants a hamster. Grandma is paying for animal and cage and expenses so leave cost out of it.

I've read online where they can be difficult. Can anyone confirm? I've also read where Guinie pigs are much better but must be in pairs and not sure I want two.

I'm looking for minimal maintenance.

Thanks is advance

Sleeps all day, up all night making noise. Will get out so you'll have a rodent loose in your house. The cage will constantly reek of hamster piss.

At some point will bite the shite out of you or your daughter with these...

Get one of these instead...what could go wrong?

Get her a pet rock..that's going to be the safest bet. I've owned:
Hamster - damn thing use to break out of its cage regularly. One early am while I was stumbling through the house to go fishing I stepped on it..a friggen bloody mess everywhere. Hard to explain that to a 5 yr old.
Dogs - just no. Needier then the kids.
Cat - to hell with a cat, they're snobs.
Rabbit - one died the 1st night we had it. The 2nd one was flat arse mean. It would literally come after you. Cleaning it's cage became trickier than pulling up on an alligator line.
Fish - expire faster than milk.
turtle - stink

King Snake. You two can feed them live mice together.

I'd go Kodiak bear or silverback gorilla. They're so cute and cuddly! Easy to care for or so I've been told!

We got my daughter a Golden Retriever puppy at 6. She loved that dog. We had to say goodbye in 2011 (Frigging Cancer) but got the boy below. I can't imagine raising kids without a dog.
