The person who cares the least in the conversation doesn't have to say thanks.

So in email conversation with my boss/best client I say thanks. When in email conversation with my battered syndrome wife/significant other.

This is the correct answer. Plus people sometimes honestly just forget they received the email. I've seen people with literally 2000 unread emails, they forget stuff.

What I do take issue with is people who reply to all with "thanks" or "ok" when only one or two out of a massive list need that acknowledgement.

When someone includes a Read Receipt it pops up with a window saying Jane Doe would like to acknowledge that you read this email. (Something like that)

Would you like to send? You can click no. Used to do it all the time to a co-worker that loved Read Receipts.
