Just trying to toss some useful info into this thread.
And that is quite useful, sir.
And, I was also giving an example of settlers. Yes, it would take time to get a great foothold, but it is doable for survival early on.

With the type of clan we've built, there may be a point where we may want to consider offensive action beyond our island to conquer land...clearly for the sole purpose for growing crops.
We must think about what is best for the clan rather than worry about the poor souls who aren't part of the clan.

Hey now, there is always room on the island for a Marine with your skills. I don't think that clan would reject an obvious choice. Seems like our island clan is shaping up to be all surviving and all powerful - although, of course, we would be of the peaceful sort unless threatened.

I'd like to stress the point to all that this is not easily done. Even assuming your soil is good and ready and that the time of year is right, most crops take anywhere from 2-6 months to produce. You'll need meat sources as well.
It's not easy, I agree. However, if catastrophe happens at the end of summer vs the end of winter could mean a lot more deaths from starvation if we can't get at least the first harvest started faster and start building a sustainable crop for what's left after the major die offs.

thanks Space. I've grown lot of gardens from scratch and the results are really pot luck. The problem is a lot of soils have become slightly acidic over time due to industrial pollutants in the rainfall. Typically getting your soil pH correct (in my area) involves adding 20 to 40 pounds of pelletized lime per 1000 ft sq over a period of a few years. Then, you need to get your organic matter levels up (cover crops do this). After that you can grow a LOT of food in a given area.

Area I live is perfect for a SHTF scenario. No road access, 70,000 people in an area the size of Florida, amazing abundance of fish and game, relatively mild climate.
And all 70,000 plus survivalists will pick each other apart until there is only one.

Admittedly, I haven't done much gardening in quite some time and I honestly don't know about what my soil would require to do that - and even less for the island (yes, it is real and happens to be in a very southern state). Your information is gem that little realize...

so what you're saying is that the rain actually works against our crops rather than benefits them because of the acidity from industrial pollutants?
You know, that's interesting because a few years ago I noticed that my yard wasn't properly growing regardless of frequent watering and fertilizing. One of my neighbors has a perfect yard. I mean PERFECT! I asked him what his secret was...
Immediately he asked me if I put down lime. I had no clue what he was talking about. He indicated that the soil in our area is very acidic and seems to be getting worse, so to balance out the PH levels I need to lay down lime.
That day I purchased pellatized lime and spread it on the yard. I lightly watered it in and waited.
A couple of months later, my lawn nearly looked as good as his and it remained green throughout a very dry and hot August. The lime seemed to be like a steroid shot for the grass.
We need to bring that old fricker into our island clan.
As for me...well, you need me because 1) I'll do whatever it takes to ensure our survival even if that means getting my hands dirty (ie. bloody), 2) I have experience trapping and snaring, 3) I'm a creative strategic thinker who values context (ie. learning from the past) to achieve future goals, and 4) you don't want me to be your enemy.

How big is this fricking island? You've got half the OT on it now.

Excellent, sir. I know of some pretty good farmland in the area. Maybe we can get some locals to farm the land for us in return for "protection."

Actually, it is a fair sized island... Well, there is only kills and fam, spiff and fam, and a couple of others that may have been invited depending on vote/needs. Are you applying?

Now way man. I don't want to be tied down to one spot. I told you, I'm going to running a business. But I may stop by from time to time to trade and barter.

That sounds like a good plan. I think that can happen. Although you may need some protection while moving through the area from all of the baddies that are sure to be around. I think we would be willing to let you store some of your arms and equipment on the island - heck, we would even guard it for you...

That sounds like a good plan. Just remember, I'll be doing business with DirtyMike's army of bandits too so if you try to frick me over I'll give him your location and defensive plan. If everyone plays nice then no one has anything to worry about.

I don't think you would have to worry about doing business with dirtymike's clan. Kills and I would have eliminated that threat early on.

What will be your approaching signal? You better have a signal if you don't want to become a warning sign that is nailed to a tree...

Me either. I think in our expanding territory, we should set up an early warning system to let us know of any movement.
