I've been printing my stuff on canvas for the last couple years just because it's a lot easier (just order, ship, & hang), but recently I have started not liking canvases like I use to. I get the feeling elements of the images are lost on canvas that you have on paper. The richness of the image seems lost.

Anyone have the same feelings toward canvas?

I've only ever done paper. The canvas I've seen always seems to be fairly course thread that doesn't work well with fine details.

They look too detailed to be a painting and not detailed enough to be a photograph imo. (There are hyper-realistic paintings but they are done on a smoother surface.)

If I printed on rough canvas I'd want it to look like a painting so I'd probably use photoshop to make the photo look more like a painting (less details, more abstract) before printing.

I completely agree. The richness of my dick pics are not transferred correctly on the canvas media.

That's because canvas can't show fine details

Never printed on canvas. Usually paper or metal. Use Nations, adoramapix, and bayphoto.

I've never done metal or glass. The metal ones are pretty expensive.

The main reason I printed on canvas is it keeps my time and money down on pieces I've sold. A 20x30 print, nicely framed and matted easily runs $100+ I can get a 20x30 canvas, gallery wrap, ready to hang for about $55 through CG Pro Prints. I can charge $189 a print and make a nice little profit.

Do you host your photos on a website for sale (digital copy)? Or do you just sell prints?

I've tried putting photos online or at least applying for that option, but all the consent forms required were a PITA.

I only print and sell at coffee houses, gift shops, restaurants, and the occasional hanging in a gallery done through a photography club I am in (even tho I've never sold one in the gallery hangings)

I know someone that prints her photography on canvas and prints. I asked and this is her response:

"The canvas prints sell very well, but paper will always do better. I print on high gloss or metallic paper and matte them with a 3-4" border and a thick black frame. You just can't go wrong with it. When completing online orders, the paper prints always sell faster, I only hand deliver the framed/matted prints locally. If you do choose to print on canvas, have the image 'flow over' the edges so that it doesn't just end."

What do you mean by richness, btw? Are you talking about color saturation? Are you converting your images to cmyk to preview before you print?
