That's cool. I graduated high school in Pittsburgh in 76 and we painted our fire plug to look like it had the US flag draped on it for the bicentennial. Pittsburgh was a great place to live in the age of the 70's Steelers.

Sitting in the backseat of a station wagon that faced the car behind you. You would start waving at the driver, the make faces, then someone would eventually flip off the driver. Mom always seemed to be looking when that happened.

Fighter jets, everywhere all day during the cold war. We used to go sit in the backyard and watch them do their practice runs when I was a kid.
Paddling in school. Won't see that anywhere today.
Old TV's that didn't have remotes and to adjust the volume there was a slider you used instead of a button.
Small, locally owned stores everywhere before the age of Walmart/Big Box Stores.
Only 3 regular station on the TV. If you wanted FOX you had to switch to the UHF band and rotate the antenna.
Riding bikes without mandatory helmets (I'm amazed we never got hurt)

Reading Cablecast or TV guide to find out what was on TV.

Hitchhiking. It used to be a safe and refreshingly bohemian form of transportation. I hitchhiked all over the West Coast, including an L.A.-to-Canada trip. I have more memories of these vacations that most of the others I've taken.
Also, riding pre-Amtrack trains, the Lark and the Coast Starlight in particular.

Playing tackle games like British Bulldog and tackle football at recess at school
Never heard the term "British Bulldog" but we played a game called "Smear the queer"....Can you imagine the outrage if that was played today?
And for you young punks, it had nothing to do at all with homosexuality.

That sounds more like what we used to call "all against all" We'd actually play with whatever runner got the ball trying to go up the levee when we were building bonfires.
British Bulldog (at least as we played it) was a game with two lines about 20-30 yards apart. One team stayed between the lines and the other tried to run from one line to the other. The team between the lines would try to tackle them. I think whoever got tackled without making it to the other line joined the team between the lines.

Kickball and dodgeball in elementary school
The really tall slides in elementary school
candy cigarettes
Choose your own adventure books
rotary telephones
TVs without remotes
Donkey Kong and Pac Man
Playing outside until dark
BB gun wars
The variety pack of cereals that came in little boxes - where you could just open the box/bag and pour the milk in
big league chew
cow tales (candy - one of my favorites)
100 grand candy bar
the little wax bottles that had flavored juice in them
lincoln logs
Sears Christmas catalogs (we would spend hours looking at those things)
Those orange pushups you would buy from the ice cream truck
Just a few that I can remember...will add more later

The card catalog in the school library. You ask a kid what the Dewey Decimal system is these days and they think it's a techno band

Going outside on Christmas morning to see kids playing with their new toys.
We were always outside with ours when growing up. Dad would take us to see our cousin's stuff and they were always outside, too. Nowadays, not so much. My kids did get out a bit this past one, though!
