Hello wise OT Mechanics,
Car: 2004 Honda Civic (7th generation)
Miles: 160k
Issue: Friend of mine got an oil change today (last one was in Nov). Was told “build up of oil above and below the pan” and should get looked at. I assume they are suggesting he may have an oil leak. He says he checked his oil just a few days ago and level seemed fine. Assuming there is a leak I guess it could be anything such as gasket, oil pan, seals? Really won’t know until you get in there?

Probably a loose Johnson rod in the oil housing converter. Going to need to drive it in reverse for about 20 miles at highways speeds to tighten it back up.

Below the pan? What does that even mean? There is nothing below the pan other than the ground.

Clean engine and all the old oil residue and drive for 2 weeks then reinspect for leaks. If it’s a real leak then the ground underneath his parking spot will have oil accumulation. Prob nothing wrong.

It's probably just the gasket where the oil pan mates (if I'm understanding the "build up" term correctly). It's not going to leak much oil, just cause a mess. Anyway, a new oil pan and gasket would probably be like $250 installed. You don't necessarily need a new oil pan, but they'll probably charge you just as much to clean it than it would be to get a new one.

ETA: start running Mobil 1 high mileage full synthetic. Buy it at Wal-Mart in the 5 quart jug. It's like $20. I've never had an engine issue prior to 250k.

It means there is oil above and below where the oil pan connects to the block. It’s probably the valve cover gasket, but you need to get in there and look to make sure.

Opposite ends of the engine. Valves on top, pan on bottom.

I've had my 02 Civic 7th gen since it was 70,000 miles old. It's now got 300000 on it and I've done just about everything to the vehicle.

One of the things that happens is the oil pan nuts get loose. I believe they're supposed to be torque to 8 foot pounds. 14 foot-pounds also comes to mind. Somewhere in that range I'm not at home right now so I can't check my service manual for you.

Couple other things that can occur is the valve cover gasket leaks. It's very difficult to get them to seal properly too, even with very clean mating surfaces and brand new gaskets under the bolts and cover and OEM brand sealant in the proper places. The camshaft seal also tends to leak. It's basically just a plastic cap with a rubber o-ring in it that snaps in to the transmission side of the cylinder head between the head and the valve cover gasket.

These are the known problem areas for oil leaks on that vehicle. Not that they're necessarily problems because they're Hondas so they don't tend to have any problems but when they do leak that's usually where it's coming from.

I have the oem service manual so if you need any information or pictures let me know

Typically but on many front-wheel-drive cars and especially in the case of the 7th gen Civic there's a sub frame member that crosses under the oil pan
