She is 6. I am 28 and my wife just turned 24. We will be guardians. My sister in law left my neice to my mother in law but she and her husband thought it would better for us to raise her as they live on a fixed income and we are financially successful (we also do not have kids yet). We also live in a blue ribbon school district and we put her in a local elementary magnet.

I certainly hope it goes well for you. Most adoptions (non family) are rough. It's amazing the negative effect adoption can have on a child.
We adopted our kid when he was 9. He's 17 and we've had some rough times. He's settling in a bit better now. I thing the worse is behind us. That being said, I wouldn't trade the experience or him for anything.
It just about broke our hearts when he came to live with us and all he had to his name was being dragged behind him in a garbage bag...

If the dad gave up his rights to the child, and ya'll are the legal guardians, just contact family services in you're local area, you may not even need your own legal representation to adopt...
