Very likely. How successful would his reign have been do you think? Given his personality, would a counter revolution have happened?

I think so. Like most of the people who were in or came to power in England (and indeed in Europe) at that time, he based a lot of his thinking and actions on his religion. Whoever came to power tended to suppress the other competing religions - Catholic, Anglican, Presbyterian, Puritan, etc., etc. I don't think he was an exception.

On the other hand, the people who came to America developed a kind of live and let live theory of religion. Probably because a lot of them fled Europe to escape the religiously motivated chaos and fighting. (I've read that Cromwell himself seriously considered emigrating a time or two on a couple of occasions when things weren't going well for his side/his religion.)

I'm not sure the people living in the colonies would have gone for the suppression other religions and of things like entertainment, music, plays, etc.
