He's going to be taking electives his 1st year so tell him not to get too comfortable with how easy college seems to be.

As soon as he hits his engineering classes he will need to stop partying.

Tell him not to dick off with the electives and get B/C's. You need to get your As in those classes so that your C's/Ds in dynamics and thermodynamics don't hurt ur gpa as bad.

The main thing that matters when it comes to GPA are the teachers in those intro classes. It's the difference between a 'C' or in 'A' in a 5 hour course because you have the head of the math department or a teacher who wants everyone to do well. Check RateMyProfessors Koofers and there's another main one that I forgot.
--------------------------------------------

you are correct, the teacher is the key. Problem with ratemyprofessor.com is some are not listed and if the review is written by a genius or A student, you get a inaccurate review. They'll say the teacher is easy, but they are all easy to some. You need to get the opinion of the average student. That's how you get an accurate opinion.

You will receive a lot of hatred in this thread from OT millionaires (manual laborers).

the problem now is LSU went to a plus/minus scale. So a 70 is a C- and you get a 1.75. So, if you get a 70 in every class you could graduate with a 2.0, now it's a 1.75 & you need a 2.0 for the degree. They just screwed the students. So those D's in thermo, dynamics, Fluids & Heat transfer will kill you. Plus you need a 2.0 in all ME courses, so you better make some A's if you're going to make D's.

When did/does this take effect? So is a 79 a 2.25?

One more thing if he does drop a class tell him to continue to go to that class except for test days. He paid for it getting all the information he can, so next go round it won't be a surprise. He can review everything and spend more time with the material in the summer.

You need to tell him he is wasting his time getting a degree. Street smarts is more important that book smarts.

There were some classes we would sign up for at the beginning of the semester just to make friends in the class. We would drop it before the deadline but have a friend in the class to get old homework and tests.

That stuff won't work anymore. You are allowed 3 drops in the first 60 hrs & 3 drops after 60 hrs. SO USE THEM WISELY!!

get a calculator that does:

matrix solutions

and x-y to polar conversions.

For homework and projects, most of my teachers didn't care if we shared answers. They just kindly reminded us that if we got the wrong answer, everyone fails .

My TI-89 has, and even after graduation still does black magic wizardy math.

Matrix solutions, eigenvector/eigenvalues, derivatives, integrals, series solutions, differential equations, .... The list is endless. It even does time value of money problems came in handy for econ. There's even a function to do Fourier series. Good luck doing that by hand .

ETA- that really sucks about the drop policy. If they are strict abt that, I predict massive drop in ME grads.

I was wrong it's a 1.7 not a 1.75. so a 79 is a 2.3.

relative level of performance across two or more courses.

Table 1

COURSE ONE COURSE TWO
GRADE HOURS CARRIED QUALITY POINTS GRADE HOURS CARRIED QUALITY POINTS
A+ 1 4.3
A 1 4.0
A- 3.7
B+ 3.3
B 3.0
B- 2.7
C+ 2.3
C 2.0
D+ 1.3
D 1.0
D- 0.7
F 0.0

You have to be kidding. Go to a class all semester even if you aren't going to be graded? Has engineering become that easy after I graduated thAt you have time to dick around like that?

I guess my job will be super secure for the rest of my life. There are not enough engineers in the world as it is. That theory shite is to teach how to think as an engineer, but actual engineering is taught on the job.

It is not like you spending any "extra time" sitting in a class that you have been going to already. I am not sure how you label this as dicking around.
