this is very common and when i rewired my house i did this. Basic switches require no common so the hot comes in on back and leaves on white or vise versa. To mark this he should have wrapped the white with black electrical tape.
as far as your 4 way switch, this is what i did on a mystery three way switch. just keep switching wires around on the one that is wrong until you get it right. the only one you don't move around is the ground and a common if the switch calls for it (most don't).
On my attic boxes I labeled the cover for what wires went where to make additions extremely easy.
