My dad did it for about 40 years. When I asked how he adjusted he said you never do.
Have also worked all kinds of swings, Dupont schedule; 2-3-2; whatever the 7 off shite is. None of them really make it better. There are trade offs.

Operators start at 50k/yr (straight time) whereas an engineer will start at 80k/yr. 10 years down the road the operator makes 80k (straight time) whereas the engineer can be anywhere between 100 - 300k depending on performance and promotions. Engineers who perform better and are promotable will be in the higher number. Low performers in the lower number.
Wherever that operator works he needs to get out ASAP. My base is 100k and that’s working nothing except built in OT. With just a couple days OT a month, I can make 130k.

Everyone has an opinion.. mine happens to be I love shift work .. your candy arse might not but thats on you for picking a shift job..

I would throw in Lab Techs. Base pay once fully qualified which take about 2 years is $42. With overtime last year our average pay was around $130k.

You're probably one of the hard mother frickers that brags that you only need 5 hours of sleep when you get home because you get the 5 others sleeping in your office chair while everyone snickers at your opinion when you tell everyone why managment can't make money.
Meanwhile, you are giving hand jibbers to your shift lead hoping to maintain the 24hrs of OT you need per pay period to afford the lifestyle you pretend is easy to maintain.
Don't worry, I know your personality and can stroke your ego enough to have you doing some risky shite on nightshift for nothing more than bragging rights and a lunch ticket.

A lot of the small places around BR start you just marginally higher. $25/hr with shift diff and all for the first 6 months. Then a pretty large bump when you get your first skill.

You will probably be divorced twice and bankrupt at least once in the next 15 years. LOL

Nah, he will work 1200 hours a year in order to prevent the bankruptcy. He will tell his coworkers getting paid is better than sitting home doing nothing on a Wednesday.
Neglect to realize he made so much that year because he worked two fulltime jobs.

I'm laughing because I hear this same shite every. single. day.
Engineering is better in almost every single way than operations. It's just a fact. Hardcore ops boys will never admit it though.
Usually they all say they could have been an engineer too.
Just one semester short.

I'm really not sure what this has to do with any of it, but just say either side of 40.

just wondering why you are speaking in certainties like that. This is a college kid argument or a bitter person's argument that isn't happy with his life. Check Monroe's post a page or so back. It's spot on
Why can't both be viable options that can pay extremely well as long as the person in said job is knowledgeable and driven to succeed

What type of plant does a 10yr operator make 80k at???
A chocolate factory?

Because one is significantly better than the other.
It's just the way it is.
That doesn't mean that each job doesn't have positives and negatives. Engineers, good ones for sure, don't become operators. There is a reason why.

As far as base, several. Although that base pay is usually reflective of the operator and not what is available to them.
There are still a lot of positions that are still considered operators that don't pay near what some larger sites do.
