One way to get rid of squatters in NYC: turn them into fugitives!

So I think this story came into the news a week or so ago that a dead woman was found in her apartment in a duffle bag
But yesterday the nypd announced that they suspect that squatters were behind it all and are now looking for them

“We believe that some squatters took the apartment over and this woman came home to get this apartment set up, and walked in on the squatters that were there,” Chief Kenny said.
Investigators believe the squatters, a man and a woman, had been inside the apartment for at least two days before she arrived. The unknown pair apparently attacked Vitel when she entered the home, killing her with blunt force trauma to the head.

To be clear squatters are scum and deserve the worst outcomes but there is no new legal trick that "turned them into fugitives"
