My parents simply never let me use ADHD as an excuse. Did the trick. Your kids are learning more than you might think. Because they have a lack of impulse control, they have learned to ingest information far quicker than normal children.
In my experience as someone with ADHD, and observing others, there are 2 things I've consistently noticed with ADD & ADHD kids that I don't see talked about much. A) they are more intelligent than average, because their brains gave learned to ingest information quicker. B) in situations where adrenaline is produced, we get a much higher dose than normal.
Both are completely anecdotal, but true in my experience, and B is something most parents don't realize they are dealing with. It takes longer for their kids to level out than they think, so it creates issues when the kids are still jacked up where normal kids have calmed down.
Btw, if you have ADHD, watch out. Its a dominant trait. Statistically, if one parent has it, 15 out of 16 kids will have it. My 9 month old son is so hyper my parents have said he makes me look like I was a calm baby, and I was a terror as a kid to anyone who wanted peace and quiet.
Edit: I'm one of the dumb ones, for the record.

Uhhh you must not realize we are in agreement. I'm anti-medicine on this big time.
I think you stated your position poorly in your initial post (you later clarified)
You may need to trade in your Ritalin for a nootropic....

I am as well. I am going to do everything I can to avoid having my kid(s) put on medication for this. I know from experience. I took Ritalin as a kid and stopped once I got in high school because I didn't like how it made me feel. So I know what it's like for my son.

That's true. A year or two back I started a very similar thread where I was very articulate. I assumed everyone knew how I felt and I barely even explained myself
