“No altitude deconflictions discussed prior to or during the airshow”

quote:

According to the report, The P-63 was a part of a three-ship formation of historic fighter airplanes and the B-17 was the lead of a five-ship formation of historic bomber airplanes at the time of the crash.

The NTSB analyzed audio from the air show's radio transmissions and found that the air boss directed both formations to maneuver southwest of the runway. He also directed the fighter formation to transition into a trail formation, fly into front of the bomber formation and head toward the 500-foot show line. The bombers were told to fly down the 1,000-foot show line.

The NTSB says before or during the flight there was no discussion of 'altitude deconfliction', or flight information that would have reduced the risk of a midair collision.

The report says when the fighter formation moved toward the flying display ares, the P-63 was in a left bank and collided with the left side of the B-17, causing the planes to break up and crash to the ground below.

Lack of planning and signals during the formation Flight led to the p-63 and bomber crossing paths. Due to the left hand turn and the faster aircraft on the inside, the pilot of the p-63 could not see the bomber before impact.

Here is the breakdown from Juan Brown (blancolirio)

Terrible tragedy.

Wow. I really wasn't expecting it to be poor flight planning.

So the fighter being directed to the 500 ft show line meant that he would have to be inside the bomber's line with respect to the crowd and that's why their paths overlapped. Is that correct?

The P 63 should’ve been on the same line as the two aircraft that you could see flying directly overhead one of the camera shots but instead for some reason the P 63 came quite wide and was way off line all the way into the 1000 foot mark where the B-17 unfortunately was

From what I understand (in most parade flights) slower aircraft take the 500 ft line and the higher speed aircraft are at the 1000 and 2000 lines.

The air boss called for a crossover maneuver changing the lines for both aircraft types and the p-63 crossed over (1000 to 500) in the turn thinking he had already cleared the bomber.
