A buddy of mine was in the State Police (now retired) and had a stack of confiscated brake tags on the work bench in his garage. I was over drinking one night and laughing at some of the really bad fakes that looked like a kid colored them. Then I saw some that looked really good. I asked how the frick he could tell the difference between a fake and real one from a distance. He showed me the real ones have a perforated edge from where they are torn out of a book and that's the way he can spot a fake. I couldn't believe he could see that but the stack proved otherwise. Now he's damn near blind as a bat and can't see shite

The ticket for not having one is wayyyyy cheaper than the ticket for having an expired one.

False. That's an old untruth from back in the day, they are about the same price.
But, the ticket for a fake one is way worse than an expired or missing one, even up to jail time.

Some inspection stations go overboard. For instance a few years ago they rejected my renewal because the motor on the drivers side window went out and the window wouldn't go down. He rejected me because he said if stopped the window had to work in order to communicate with the officer. I told him I could just open the door to communicate, that wasn't acceptable.
The advantage of living in a area with low population is getting a sticker just for showing up. And hardly no wait in the DMV. But can't get high speed Internet even though att fiber runs through my yard.

The shops approved to give the stickers don't make much per sticker. Only 3-4 dollars per sticker. Some hope to up-sell you. Don't buy into it. Fix your own headlights, blinkers, etc. you can do much of the work yourself for a fraction of the cost

And if I got a badly cracked windshield in my field of view, I just knock the whole damn windshield out so I can see good and drive on
