Similar thing happen to me in November with Sprint, they called my wife and told her I needed a new phone. She said that I wouldn't want a new phone, but my old phone wouldn't work on 1/1.
End of story got a free new phone and they agree to lower my bill by $20 a month.

AT&T sent me a letter around the first of the year telling me my old phone would have limited capacity once they turned on the 5g network and they would be sending me a new free phone in the next few weeks. New phone arrived and I was surprised that it wasn’t some kind of a disposable burner. iPhone xr that’s a pretty nice device and the switch was a snap.
